BIDS OUT OF ROTATION (LAWS 29-32)

ANY BID (Including PASS) OUT OF ROTATION MAY BE ACCEPTED BY THE NEXT BIDDER. IF NOT, THE BID ALWAYS REVERTS TO CORRECT POSITION AND:

(1) IF THE BID WASPASS”

(A) BEFORE ANYONE HAS BID – OFFENDER IS SILENCED FOR ONE ROUND

(B)AFTER BIDDING HAS STARTED:

(i) IF IT WAS RHO TURN TO CALL, OFFENDER IS SILENCED FOR ONE ROUND.

(ii) IF IT WAS PARTNER TO CALL, OFFENDER IS SILENCED FOR WHOLE AUCTION. OFFENDER’S PARTNER MAY NOT DOUBLE OR REDOUBLE AT HIS NEXT TURN

(iii) IF IT WAS LHO’S TURN TO CALL, AND OFFENDER’S FIRST CALL IS OTHER THAN PASS, IT IS TREATED AS A ‘CHANGE OF CALL’ (LAWS 25B AND 16). TO AVOID, OFFENDER SHOULD PASS FOR ONE ROUND

(2) BID OF A SUIT OR NO TRUMPS

(A) RHO’S TURN TO CALL AND RHO PASSES THEN BID CAN BE REPEATED WITHOUT PENALTY.

(B) RHO’S TURN TO BID AND RHO BIDS:

(i) IF DENOMINATION IS REPEATED PARTNER IS SILENCED FOR ONE ROUND. NB: IF THE BID WAS IN NT AND IF IN CONTEXT A REPEAT OF THE BID MEANS SOMETHING DIFFERENT (E.G., OVERCALL OF 1NT IS NOT THE SAME AS OPENING 1NT), THEN TREAT AS B (ii)

(ii) IF DENOMINATION IS CHANGED (INCLUDING PASS) PARTNER IS SILENCED FOR REST OF AUCTION. (LEAD PENALTIES MAY THEN APPLY).

(C) PARTNER’S OR LHO’S TURN TO BID:

(i) IF OFFENDER HAS NOT PREVIOUSLY BID: PARTNER IS SILENCED FOR WHOLE AUCTION, AND, UNLESS THE OFFENDER SUBSEQUENTLY BIDS THE SAME DENOMINATION, LEAD PENALTIES MAY APPLY

(ii) IF OFFENDER HAS PREVIOUSLY BID, TREAT AS CHANGE OF CALL, WITH POSSIBLE LEAD PENALTIES.

OPENING LEAD OUT OF TURN (LAWS 53-54)

DECLARER HAS FIVE CHOICES: -

(1) ACCEPT LEAD - SPREAD CARDS ON TABLE AND ASK PARTNER TO PLAY THE HAND.

(2) ACCEPT LEAD - ASK PARTNER (DUMMY) TO SPREAD CARDS ON TABLE AND AS DECLARER PLAY NEXT TO THE TRICK.

(3) IF YOU WISH CARD LED TO BE A MAJOR PENALTY CARD - ASK CORRECT PERSON ON LEAD TO LEAD WHATEVER THEY WISH. (SEE MAJOR PENALTY CARD)

(4) DEMAND A LEAD OF THE SUIT WRONGLY LED.

(5) OR DENY A LEAD OF THE SUIT WRONGLY LED.

IN CASES (4) AND (5) THE LEAD REVERTS TO THE CORRECT HAND. THE

OFFENDER MAY TAKE THE WRONGLY LED CARD BACK INTO HAND AND PLAY

TO THE TRICK AS THEY WISH.

LEAD OUT OF TURN DURING PLAY (LAWS 53, 55-56 )

BY DEFENDERS: A LEAD MAY BE ACCEPTED BY DECLARER. IF NOT, SITUATION IS AS AT 3, 4 AND 5 IN OPENING LEAD OUT OF TURN.

BY DECLARER: A LEAD MAY BE ACCEPTED BY EITHER DEFENDER – WHICHEVER SPEAKS FIRST, OTHERWISE LEAD REVERTS TO THE CORRECT HAND WITHOUT PENALTY

BY DUMMY: LEAD REVERTS TO THE CORRECT HAND WITHOUT PENALTY

MAJOR PENALTY CARD (LAWS 48,49, 51, 52))

DECLARER CANNOT HAVE A PENALTY CARD DURING THE PLAY OF THE HAND: IF HE SO WISHES HE / SHE CAN REVEAL ALL 13 CARDS TO THE DEFENDERS (UNWISE!!!)

BY DEFENDERS: THE CARD MUST BE PLAYED AT THE FIRST LEGAL OPPORTUNITY EXCEPT IF OFFENDER’S PARTNER HAS THE LEAD, DECLARER CAN IMPOSE LEAD PENALTIES INSTEAD

MINOR PENALTY CARD (LAWS 50B, 50C)

IS ONE THAT IS BELOW THE RANK OF AN HONOUR AND WHICH WAS EXPOSED THROUGH MECHANICAL ERROR – EG ACCIDENTALLY DROPPED ON FLOOR, OR TWO CARDS PLAYED SIMULTANEOUSLY – LEAD PENALTIES ARE NOT AN OPTION. THE OFFENDER MAY NOT PLAY ANY OTHER MINOR CARD IN THE SUIT BEFORE THE PENALTY CARD IS PLAYED.

THE REVOKE (LAWS 61-64)

(1) A REVOKE CAN BE AVOIDED IF:

IN DEFENCE, BEFORE OFFENDER OR OFFENDER’S PARTNER PLAYS TO THE NEXT TRICK, IF EG, THE OFFENDER’S PARTNER SAYS “HAVING NO SPADES, PARTNER”?

(i) IF THE ANSWER IS ‘CORRECT, I HAVE NO SPADES’, PLAY CONTINUES AND THERE IS NO NEED TO CALL THE DIRECTOR (UNLESS DECLARER WISHES TO CLAIM ‘DAMAGE’)

(ii) IF THE ANSWER IS ‘WHOOPS – I HAVE A SPADE’, THE DIRECTOR MUST BE CALLED.  ANY CORRECT CARD MAY BE SUBSTITUTED – BUT 3 (ii) BELOW APPLIES

(2) A REVOKE IS ESTABLISHED: AFTER THE OFFENDER OR THE PARTNER OF THE OFFENDER HAS PLAYED TO THE NEXT TRICK

(3) A REVOKE IS NOT ESTABLISHED IF THE PLAY OF AN IMPROPER CARD IS DISCOVERED BEFORE THE REVOKE IS ESTABLISHED AS ABOVE. THEN:

(i) DECLARER MAY PICK UP THE CARD WITHOUT PENALTY

(ii) IF BY A DEFENDER THEN THE CARD IS CLASSED AS A “MAJOR PENALTY CARD” (Page 2)

TRICK AWARDS AFTER AN ESTABLISHED REVOKE

(1) DID THE REVOKING SIDE WIN ANY TRICKS AFTER THE REVOKE? IF YES, THEN ONE TRICK IS TRANSFERRED

(2) IF THE REVOKER (NOT PARTNER) WON THE REVOKE TRICK (CAN ONLY BE BY TRUMPING) THEN ONE TRICK IS TRANSFERRED ADDITIONALLY TO ANY AWARDED AT POINT (1)

SPECIAL NOTES

(A) ONE CANNOT REVOKE ON THE TWELFTH TRICK. “REWIND” THE TRICK AND PLAY CORRECTLY.

(B) IF AFTER AN ESTABLISHED REVOKE THE NON-OFFENDING SIDE FEELS

THEY HAVE BEEN DAMAGED FURTHER THAN THE LAW INDICATES, THEY MAY CLAIM FURTHER TRICKS. IN THIS CASE, IT IS THE DIRECTOR’S RESPONSIBILITY TO ANALYSE THE HANDS TO JUSTIFY THE CLAIM.

INSUFFICIENT BID (LAW 27)

ANY INSUFFICIENT BID MAY BE ACCEPTED BY THE NEXT BIDDER. IF NOT:

IF THE BID WAS CONVENTIONAL, OR THE SUFFICIENT BID IN THE SAME SUIT WOULD BE CONVENTIONAL, OFFENDER’S PARTNER IS SILENCED FOR THE REST OF THE AUCTION.

IF BOTH BIDS WOULD BE NATURAL:

(A) IF THE OFFENDER BIDS THE SAME SUIT AT THE FIRST SUFFICIENT LEVEL, THE BIDDING PROCEEDS AS NORMAL.

(B) IF THE OFFENDER MAKES ANY OTHER BID, INCLUDING ‘PASS’, PARTNER IS SILENCED FOR THE REST OF THE AUCTION.

THE HESITATION / UNAUTHORISED INFORMATION (LAW 16)

NORMAL BIDDING SHOULD BE IN TEMPO

SOMETIMES, HOWEVER, ONE NEEDS TO CONSIDER THE POSITION BEFORE OFFERING

A BID OR PASSING. THIS SITUATION IS REFERRED TO AS A HESITATION AND IT IS QUITE PROPER AND LEGAL. ISSUES CAN ARISE IF THE HESITATION IS FOLLOWED BY A PASS OR BY ANY ‘MARGINAL’ BID

IF A PLAYER CONSIDERS THAT THE OPPONENT HESITATED BEFORE PASSING, THEN BEFORE MAKING A CALL THAT PLAYER CAN ESTABLISH WHETHER BOTH SIDES AGREE THAT THERE WAS A HESITATION.

IF THERE WAS AN AGREED HESITATION FOLLOWED BY A PASS: BIDDING AND PLAY CAN CONTINUE TO THE END OF THE HAND, SUBJECT TO THE CAVEAT GIVEN BELOW, WITHOUT AT THAT STAGE CALLING THE DIRECTOR.

IF THERE IS NO AGREEMENT ABOUT THE HESITATION, THE DIRECTOR MUST BE CALLED BEFORE BIDDING & PLAY PROGRESSES.

CAVEAT: IT IS MANIFEST THAT THROUGH HESITATING AND PASSING, INFORMATION HAS BEEN GIVEN THAT THE PLAYER HOLDS SOMETHING OF INTEREST. IN THAT SITUATION, THE HESITATOR’S PARTNER MAY OF COURSE CONTINUE TO BID, BUT THE TD MAY ADJUST THE SCORE IF:
