East's 1© opener is just about justified, but thereafter it was the NS bidding that went a bit off the rails! S's double is understandable, as is West's 1ª and North's double, which most people would play as 'competitive'. South passes the 2§ bid, expecting North to double again - only it got passed out, following a partnership misunderstanding. There was a lost opportunity here!
South started with the King of spades, won in Dummy. A spade was ruffed in hand, then the Ace of hearts, followed by a heart ruff - and then another spade ruff brought Declarer's tally to 5 tricks. Then in the wash, South found himself end-played and had to concede the King of trumps to Declarer, to give a score of +200 to NS. North just needs to lead one club through Declarer, and potentially 2§-2 could have been 2§x-3.
At other tables, NS ventured into an optimistic 3NT, which was made twice - three tricks in each minor and one in each major look secure, but I think that careful defence should stop the ninth trick. One East player was rather less fortunate - struggling in 2© doubled, which went for 1100! |
