Playing in the fourth round of the Four Star Swiss Teams at Brighton against the Irish international team I was dealt the attractive hand above as North, vulnerable against non-vulnerable opponents.
An explanation of the bidding:
(i) With such a big hand I started slowly in order, I hoped, to be able to fully explore all possibilities.
(ii) I chuckled inwardly as this was obviously a nonsense bid holding long spade support.
(iii) I have got to get across to partner that I have a big hand.
(iv) My partner's rebid of 2NT was 12-14 HCP and his 6C confirmed a maximum with good club support. Providing my partner has the diamond A, a grand slam must have possibilities. Oh well! what the hell.
(v) Perhaps peeved that his baby psyche had not put us off.
East led a spade and I ruffed out the Ace. Drawing trumps and discarding a diamond on the established spade the hand was soon over. To make a doubled grand slam against the Irish international team will remain with me as a highlight for ever. A lot of pairs only reached 5C.
