Unfortunately, "Sod's Law" came into play here - there was to be a Simultaneous Pairs event the following week so this hand was suited before it was recorded. It has been reconstructed from the joint memories of Frank Tomlin and Alaric Cundy as best we could remember the detail.
Frank & Stella Tomlin played this hand as East / West. They deploy a system based on a Strong 1♣ opening. Now read Frank's comments:
Stella (E) opened the bidding with 1♣ (Precision). S doubled. I bid 1♦ [An error; I should have passed to show 7 points or less because the double gave my partner the opportunity to bid again]. N bid 1♥. Stella bid 1♠. S bid 3♥. I then bid 4♣ . Stella appeared to be taken by surprise, thought for a moment, bit her tongue and passed. 4♣ became the final contract played and made by her. The opening lead by S was the King of hearts (his partner's suit) setting up three heart tricks for Declarer. At tricks 2 and three Declarer played Ace followed by the small trump, and the king and queen crashed. Six club tricks, three heart tricks and the Ace of diamonds brought home the contract. Phew. Any other opening lead and it would have been a different story.
Every score was different on this board! Stella's 4♣ bid and made finished up as a second top on the board, beaten only by 2♠ doubled, making by East, after the same King of hearts initial lead.
